This painting came from a panorama of photos I took last summer as we were leaving Scotland. We stopped at Dunure Castle, which looks out towards the Isle of Arran. It was a beautiful day, a restful and beautiful place. When I got home, I scanned the photos, and merged them together. Then did a value study. Then a sketch. Then I used the watercolor technique of layering glazes on top of one another, which creates more luminous colors. I’ve found Jeanne Dobie’s Making Color Sing – Practical Lessons in Color and Design to be very useful.
